What is Cyber Essentials certification?

Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed cybersecurity certification that demonstrates your business has essential security controls in place. It's often required for government contracts and helps protect against common cyber threats whilst showing clients and partners that you take cybersecurity seriously.

Cyber Essentials Basic: Self-assessment questionnaire reviewed by an accredited body. You complete the forms, we verify your answers and issue the certificate. Cyber Essentials Plus: Includes everything in Basic PLUS hands-on vulnerability testing of your systems. We actively scan and test your IT infrastructure to verify the controls are working properly, not just documented.

Most businesses start with Cyber Essentials Basic for general compliance and client requirements. Choose Plus if you handle sensitive data, work with government contracts requiring the higher level, or want the additional assurance of hands-on testing. Many of our charity clients require Plus certification. Many of our clients combine it with our Cyber Guard+ 24/7 managed detection and response service for complete coverage - Cyber Essentials ensures your basic controls are in place, whilst Cyber Guard+ provides ongoing monitoring and incident response. For organisations requiring additional assurance, we often recommend following Cyber Essentials Plus with annual penetration testing and our fractional CISO services for strategic cybersecurity leadership.

Basic: Typically, 2-4 weeks once you've completed the self-assessment questionnaire. Plus: 4-6 weeks as it includes the additional time for vulnerability scanning and testing of your systems.

You receive an official certificate valid for 12 months, which you can display to clients and use for tender applications. We'll remind you before renewal and can help you maintain compliance throughout the year as part of our ongoing cybersecurity services.
